The Singer 12K first appeared in the US in 1865 and became available in the UK a couple of years later. The UK machine was made in the Kilbowie, Clydebank factory and remained popular and in production for the next 40 years.
Known as Singer Fiddle Based Machine because of its base shape, the 12K was the first mass-produced sewing machine produced in volumes to buyers with expensive taste. Singer says the 12K established the UK’s marketplace for domestic sewing machines.
Despite its high cost, its attractive and reliable design meant that it sold in huge volumes and quickly established Singer as the market-leading sewing machine manufacturer for the next century. As soon as the original patents expired, other manufacturers widely copied the 12k design.
